Team: Lee Fu, Yu Chen

With respect to cultural diversity, this project provides a space for vernacular design as an interior choice. By combining the background culture of a married new Canadian couple we bring the possibility and discourse other than mainstream and the current defaulting design language dominated by eurocentrism.

Background Research-Ukraine

The character of Ukrainian folk architecture was influenced by such natural factors as the climate and available materials, by regional-ethnic traits, and by town architecture and the folk architecture of neighboring nations.

Background Research-Tibetan

Traditional Tibetan architecture has a unique style and form. The building is integrated with the magnificent natural landscape of the snow covered plateau and has a simple feeling.

Concept

The house of New Canadian will be based on the influence of Ukrainian culture and Tibetan culture, focusing on the comfort of life and the visual embodiment of their traditional culture. The living space will incorporate traditional cultural totems and decorative elements. Addpting tibetan colour palette, buddhist relevant objects and ukrainian botanical patterns, custom furniture, and more.

Simple colours and shapes will be applied in most places for visual balance, creating a harmony while highlighting clients cultural background. Important heritage furniture will also be added to the spatial layout to bring cultural identity and familiarity to clients.

Living Room

The living room adopts the traditional Tibetan design. The climate in Tibet is cold in winter and people spend most of their time indoors. Therefore their living room uses warm, saturated colors and fabrics to create a warm feeling. The materials and colors used in this space gives a strong closed and warm feel even with a large window.

Feature Wall

The feature wall of the stairwell uses traditional Ukrainian floral patterns, adapt with some other elements to make it better blend in with the surrounding design.
